About "Space Walk"
A 'Space Walk' or extravehicular activity (EVA) is when an astronaut
leaves their spacecraft while in space to perform tasks outside the vehicle. According to NASA, spacewalks
are critical for space station maintenance, satellite repairs, and scientific experiments. The first
spacewalk was performed by Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov in 1965, followed by American astronaut Ed
White. The European Space Agency documents how modern spacewalks require extensive training and
specialized equipment to protect astronauts from the harsh environment of space. These activities have
been essential for constructing and maintaining the International Space Station and have enabled crucial
repairs to satellites and space telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope. Sources: NASA - Spacewalks, European Space Agency - EVA.
